Man kills wife over suspicion of illicit relationship

Kolkata: A woman was reportedly hacked to death by her husband on Monday night at Madhugarh in Dum Dum. Later, police arrested the accused and seized the murder weapon.

It is suspected that the accused killed her wife as he suspected her of having an illicit relationship.

According to a source, the deceased identified as Ruma Sen (38) got married to Mrityunjoy Sen of Purba Sinthi, who is a fish-seller, about 20 years ago.

The age gap between the couple is around 20 years. After six years of their marriage, Ruma gave birth to a girl.

In the past few years, their relationship hit a rough patch as Mrityunjoy suspected that Ruma had illicit relationships with many men.

They had several altercations over the issue. Mrityunjoy even had arguments with some of his neighbours, who also suspected that Ruma that illicit relationships.

Irritated with such allegations, Ruma left Mrityunjoy's house a few days ago and started living in her father's home in Madhugarh with her daughter.

Late on Monday night, around 1 am, Mrityunjoy went to Madhugarh to meet Ruma. When she opened the door, she thought Mrityunjoy had come for reconciliation.

But he started stabbing her with a sharp weapon. Ruma hit the ground screaming in pain while Mrityunjoy fled from the house after the incident.

Hearing her scream, Ruma's family members ran to help her.

She was rushed to a local hospital where doctor declared her dead on arrival.

Later, Ruma's father lodged a complaint against Mrityunjoy and the police arrested him from his home on Tuesday morning. The murder weapon was also recovered.

"We came to know that an altercation ensued between the two which resulted in the murder. Till now, there are no clues that the deceased woman had any illicit relationship," said Ananda Roy, Deputy Commissioner (Zone II) of Barrackpore Police.
