Man kills wife for dowry, in cop net

Kolkata: A 20-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband at Mathurapur in South 24-Parganas on Sunday. Later, police arrested her husband on charges of murder.

According to sources, approximately two months ago, Jasmina Mondal of Bakultala got married to Sahensha Gazi of Tentulberia in Mathurapur. Before marriage Gazi's family members did not claim any money or valuables as dowry. On the contrary, they had reportedly told Mondal's family that they do not want any dowry.

But the scenario changed after their marriage. After a few days of their marriage, Gazi allegedly demanded money from Mondal. When she refused, she was allegedly beaten up regularly by her husband. On Sunday, Mondal was supposed to go to Bakultala as her name in the voters' list was registered there. When Mondal was about start her journey to Bakultala, Gazi allegedly picked up a fight with her. When she told Gazi that she would go to cast her vote, Gazi reportedly started beating Mondal.

Gazi called up Mondal's family to inform them that their daughter had committed suicide. After her parents and other family members reached the hospital, they found that Mondal was dead. Later, Mondal's family lodged a complaint against Gazi and his family members at the Mathurapur police station. On the basis of the complaint, police officers arrested Gazi. However, his family members managed to escape and evade arrest.
