Man held in Lake Town for possession of banned drug

Kolkata: A man was arrested at the Lake Town police station on Monday night for allegedly possessing banned drug codeine phosphate.

According to sources, on Tuesday night, sleuths got a tip-off that a person would be dealing in codeine phosphate somewhere in Lake Town area. They came to know that the suspect will come to Ajaynagar Khalpar at Green Park in Lake Town. Plain-clothed police officers started keeping strict vigilance in the area. Around midnight, sleuths noticed a person arrived in the area on a motorbike.

After watching him for sometime they understood that the same person was their target. But they kept waiting to find out who comes to collect the drug from him. After a few minutes when nobody came and suspect was about to leave the place when the police surrounded him. The suspect was identified as Abhishek Brahma alias Deba of Beonta in Kolkata Leather Complex. Sleuths found 5 litres of codeine phosphate liquid from him.

Brahma was immediately arrested under IPC sections 21C (punishment for contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations) and 29 (punishment for abetment and criminal conspiracy)Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Sleuths came to know that Brahma was involved in several crimes in Dum Dum. He was produced before the sixth Additional District Judge's Court on Tuesday with prayer for police custody. But due to some technical reasons Brahma has been remanded to judicial custody for one day. He will be produced before the same court on Wednesday.
