Man held for threats over puja subscriptions

Kolkata: The detective department of Bidhannagar Commissionerate in the wee hours of Saturday arrested a person on charges of extorting money claiming it to be the subscription for Kali Puja. The accused Sindhu Kundu, a resident of Duttabad Road of Salt Lake Sector I has allegedly demanded subscription of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant.
According to police sources, one Kartick Chandra Karmakar of Purbachal Housing Complex on Duttabad Road had lodged a complaint at Bidhannagar North police station on Friday evening that Kundu has been calling him over phone at different hours especially at night for the last one month and threatening him with dire consequences clearly in the form of intimidation and asking to pay in the form of subscription for Kali Puja. "Initially he demanded Rs 60,000 and then it went up to Rs 2,00,000," a senior police officer said.
