Man held for attempt to break ATM machine

Kolkata: A man was arrested by Chatterjeehat

police in Howrah for allegedly trying to break a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM machine early on July 16 morning in Belepole area.

The youth, identified as Kamalakanta Jana, used to work as a food delivery boy.

According to police, on July 16 around 3:20 am, Jana entered the SBI ATM kiosk in Belepole with an iron rod to break the ATM machine.

After breaking the frontal portion of the ATM machine Jana understood that it is impossible to break the machine with just an iron

road and so he left the ATM kiosk.

In the morning, some local residents saw the machine in broken condition and informed the concerned SBI branch.

Later, an official from the bank lodged a written complaint at the Chatterjeehat police station. After police initiated a probe, they found that the CCTV camera inside the ATM counter was not working.

Police faced problems during investigation as they didn't have the a picture of thief.

Late, it was identified that there were two CCTV cameras installed by the Howrah Police traffic department and Chatterjeehat police station.

After the scrutiny of footages from these CCTV cameras, it was seen that a person had entered the ATM counter and came out it after seven minutes.

It was also identified that the person was wearing a red T-shirt, a red helmet and arrived at the ATM kiosk on a blue scooter. Officers checked the mobile service providers to ascertain how many mobile numbers were active in that area at that point of time.

After getting the mobile number and information from sources, the police came to know about Jana.

Later, police also came to know that he resided in Sankrail area in Howrah. On Tuesday night, Jana was arrested. While searching his place, police seized a 9 mm pistol and a round of bullet.

"After arresting him we came to know that he was under huge debt and thus he needed money to repay it. He used to work as a food delivery boy for past three years. After preliminary investigation no past criminal record of Jana was found," said Swati Bhangalia, Deputy Commissioner, South, Zone II.
