Kolkata: A businessman from Baguiati and his family members were badly beaten up by an assailant who stormed into his flat at Dasdrone area on Sunday morning and demanded Rs 2 lakh from him.
Police said that the accused Md Azgar, a local anti-social, had entered the house of the victim, Amiya Dalapati and demanded the money at gunpoint. A resident of Prantik Apartment, Dalapati was threatened with dire consequences if he failed to pay the amount. The victim, however, categorically told the accused that he would not be able to pay the amount. This had infuriated the accused, following which he attacked the businessman with a sharp weapon.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim, police have arrested the accused. The incident took place at around 6.30 am on Sunday when the businessman came out of his apartment to go to the market.
After being denied the money, the accused attacked the women members of the family. The incident triggered panic among the family members who tried to flee from the flat. After being alerted by their screaming, the inmates of other flats rushed to the spot but they did not have the courage to halt the accused, as he had been carrying a firearm.
The local residents alleged that they had informed the matter to a patrolling police jeep, which was passing through the area during the incident, but the police personnel refused to intervene, saying that the area does not fall under their jurisdiction.
The local people also alleged that even Baguiati police did not take prompt action in this connection. Police later arrested Azgar, who told the investigating officer that he had demanded the money for the treatment of his son, who is suffering from some kidney related ailments.
The family members of the victim have told the police that the accused had also threatened to kill the children if he was not given the money. He had also hit a woman with a revolver butt. Police are interrogating the accused and a detailed probe has been initiated in this regard.
