Man drowned, wife rescued in New Digha

Kolkata: Seikh Manik, a resident of Memari in East Burdwan, who went to the sea along his wife in New Digha, was swept away by a strong current. Manik went missing since Sunday afternoon while his wife, identified as Ashura Bibi, was rescued by local residents.

In a separate incident, a 10-year-old boy from Howrah, who had ventured into the sea for bathing, was saved after local residents saw him battling for life. He was rescued following the intervention of the sea divers.

The boy has been identified as Sourav Mondal, a resident of Uluberia in Howrah district.

According to East Midnapore district administration, there was an alert that sea may remain turbulent. Police stations in the coastal areas conducted campaigns to stop people from venturing into the sea.

Police personnel are on surveillance on the sea beaches such as Digha, Mandarmani, Gopalpur.

The district administration has issued alert to coastal areas police stations to restrict people from going to the sea as it would remain rough on Sunday.

Seikh went to the sea along with his wife Ashura in the afternoon. While taking bath Seikh and his wife suddenly lost balance as a mighty wave hit them.

The man was immediately swept by a strong current while the wife shouted for help to draw the attention of the people on the sea shore. Sea divers managed to rescue the woman but her husband was swept away by a strong current.

Police are yet to recover the body of Seikh Manik till Sunday evening. The two injured persons were taken to the hospital.

Sea divers also rescued Sourav Mondal on Sunday.
