Man detained after elderly father's death

Kolkata: A man was detained by police for interrogation after he told the cops that his father hanged himself on Monday night and was declared dead on arrival by the doctors at the hospital.

After Chandu Chatterjee told the officers at the Baguiati police station about the death of his father Shyamal Chatterjee (83), he urged the duty officer to arrest him. The police officer detained him and during interrogation, Chandu said his father hanged himself at their flat in Aswininagar and when he rushed him to a nursing home doctors pronounced him dead.

During questioning, police officers noticed that Chandu was in an inebriated state. A patrolling van was sent to the nursing home where Chandu took his father after he allegedly hanged himself. Doctors at the nursing home told the police that there was a ligature mark on Shyamal's neck and the death was not normal. Doctors suspect that he was strangulated. The cause of death can be known through the autopsy report, said a doctor.

The body was sent for an autopsy and Chandu was kept under detention. Deputy commissioner, Airport Division of Bidhannagar Police, J Mercy said: "An unnatural death case has been lodged. We are waiting for the autopsy report. There were ambiguities in Chandu's statement. He is being interrogated further. No complaint has been lodged till Tuesday night. If any foul play is reported , actions will be taken accordingly."
