Man arrested with unaccounted money, cops look for hawala links

Kolkata: A man was arrested at Burrabazar police station for allegedly carrying huge amount of unaccounted money.

According to police, on Tuesday evening, police officials of Burrabazar police station got information about a person carrying huge amount of money. Based on the information police intercepted the accused person identified as Uday Narayan Gupta of Vivekananda Road from Rabindra Sarani was detained. During the search, police found huge amount of cash from inside a bag which he was carrying.

Immediately Gupta was detained and taken to police station. There after counting it was found that he was carrying Rs 17.5 lakh. During the interrogation, Gupta could not produce any documents to substantiate carrying of such a huge amount. Also he failed to inform the source of the money he was carrying. Later Gupta was arrested and the money has been confiscated. Details of the seized money has been conveyed to Income Tax department for further necessary action. Police are also trying to find whether Gupta has any connection with any hawala racketeer.
