Man arrested in Bihar for having Maoist links

Kolkata: The North Port police station on Wednesday night arrested a man hailing from Bihar for having links with a Maoist group.

The arrested person, Sunil Kumar, (37), lived on rent on Strand Bank Road since the past five months.

He hails from Bariarpur at Lakhisarai in Bihar.

A senior police officer said he was arrested in several cases such as murder, extortion, kidnapping etc earlier.

During interrogation , he said that he had escaped from his state and took shelter in Kolkata to evade arrest after he was wanted in a police encounter case.

A case under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) is also pending against him at Lakhisarai in Bihar. He earned his living by working as a thika worker in Burrabazar area.

A team from Lakhisarai, Bihar reached the city on Thursday to seek custody of Kumar.

There were intelligence inputs of the Maoists trying to strengthen their group at Dalma in Jharkhand that shares its boundary with Bengal.

The last Maoist activities in Jharkhand took place in the middle of the year 2018.

Following this the police were keeping a hawk eye on suspicious activities of certain people in the city as there were inputs that they may have dispersed in neigbouring states and areas to evade arrest.
