Kolkata: A person was arrested on charges of stalking a girl adjacent to a gate of Central Metro station, on Saturday evening.

The police, on the basis of CCTV footage available at the entrance staircase of the Metro station, managed to nab the offender and arrested him on the basis of the victim's complaint at Bowbazar police station.

According to police sources, the victim who is a first-year student of a college in the city, is originally a resident of North Bengal. She was talking to one of her friends when the incident occurred.

The victim stated in her complaint that the man was following her for quite some time and when she reached gate number 5 of the Metro station, he stealthily started capturing a video of her on his mobile.

However, she was able to spot his action and immediately challenged him. As the person tried to flee the spot she raised an alarm but he managed to escape.

The victim, who stays as a paying guest at an apartment in Subhas Pally, Jadavpur, informed her elder sister who stays in Kolkata about the incident. The latter reached the spot quickly and the duo subsequently went and lodged a complaint at Bowbazar police station.

The police took up investigation without any delay and within a few hours, arrested the offender. His mobile phone that was used to videograph the victim has also been seized by the police.

"After the incident of gang rape and murder of a 26-year old veterinary doctor at Hyderabad, I had told my sister on Friday to carry a knife along with her for the sake of her own safety. The incident happened on Saturday. She has come from North Bengal for studying in Kolkata and what happened with her has come as a major cause of concern for her parents," the victim's elder sister said.

Incidentally, it was only on Saturday when Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma had directed officers-in-charge of all police stations to have zero tolerance against any sort of crime against women.

The Kolkata Police chief has instructed police officials to

initiate proceedings immediately after complaint of any sort of violence or misbehavior against women and take strong action against the offender as per law.
