Man accused of cheating woman using social media, held

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a cheating case lodged in Lake Town on November 16.

According to sources, on November 16, a woman from Lake Town lodged a complaint against a youth who identified himself as Rupam Mondal.

The woman told the police that she met Mondal on Facebook a few months ago, who claimed that he was a Kolkata Police personnel.

While chatting on the social media they exchanged their mobile numbers following which both of them started talking at length everyday.

After a month of meeting each other, the woman was drawn towards Mondal.

Meanwhile Mondal proposed her to marry him to which she agreed.

In August, Mondal allegedly asked her to flee from her house along with her jewellery and cash. After a few hours she met Mondal near Sreebhumi bus stoppage with her jewellery and cash.

Following that she rode Mondal's bike and left Lake Town area. Throughout that day they reportedly roamed about the city and reached Anandapur area. They sat there for some time.

Meanwhile someone called Mondal on his mobile following which he told the woman to wait as he allegedly said that her husband had come to know about their relationship and somehow managed to get his address.

He said at present, her husband was at his place and was creating trouble. Mondal also told her that standing with the jewellery was not safe and thus he wanted to take them with him. He said after he returns he would take her to his home.

Believing Mondal, the woman gave all her belongings to him and was reportedly waiting for him till late night.

When he did not come after a few hours,she tried to call Mondal but found the mobile phone was switched off.

The woman understood that she had been cheated. Meanwhile, a police patrolling car saw her roaming aimlessly and questioned her. Later, the police asked her family members to come to Anandapur police station and handed her over to them.

During the probe, the police tracked down Mondal's mobile phone's tower location and on Tuesday night cops nabbed him and came to know that his original name was Saumitra Mondal. The police also arrested another person identified as Dulal Halder in this connection.
