Mamata to hold core committee meeting today

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting of the party's core committee on Saturday.

The meeting will be held at her Kalighat residence. After the discussion, she would leave for West Midnapore, Purulia, Bankura and Burwan districts where from she is expected to announce the bifurcation of Jhargram and Burdwan districts.

Political experts said Saturday's meeting is of great importance for three reasons.

First, the Trinamool Congress has already taken out rallies in the city condemning the vindictive attitude of the BJP in conducting the Narada sting operation probe.

The party has already taken out two rallies on March 30 and 31 respectively which were led by Chandrima Bhattacharya, president of the party's women's wing and Mayor Sovan Chatterjee respectively. It is expected that Banerjee will announce the party's future strategy in combating BJP's political vendetta. Political experts said that she had already stated that her party leaders were not involved in Narada case and the photographs were doctored.

Secondly, the by-election in Kontai South will be held in April. Chandrima Bhattacharya, president Trinamool Mahila Congress and former minister is contesting from the seat which fell vacant after Dibyendu Adhikari resigned and contested in the Lok Sabha polls.

Banerjee had assured to rehabilitate Bhattacharya and was visibly unhappy when she lost to Tanmay Bhattacharya of CPI(M) in Dum Dum North seat. Her encouragement to party leaders before any election works as a tonic and she is likely to take up this issue on Saturday.

As the Panchayat elections will be held in 2018, the Chief Minister is likely to give her instructions regarding the same as well. The two-day Panchayat conference was a great success and she has asked leaders to hold the meet every year.

The World Bank has granted Rs 2,000 crore for strengthening every Panchayat. Also, the work of constructing toilets in every rural household is going on smoothly and April 30 will be celebrated as "Nirmal Bangla Divas" when seven districts will be declared Open Defecation Free.

Thirdly, Abhishek Banerjee will attend the core committee meeting after a gap of several months. He was injured in a car crash in October, 2016. He will be addressing several meetings in South and North 24 Parganas next week as well.

It was learnt that Banerjee is not happy with the infighting that has affected the party in certain pockets and the leaders allegedly involved in infighting are likely to be pulled up.
