Mamata inaugurates slew of new projects for MSME & Textiles

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday inaugurated a slew of new projects in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Textiles sector, including production centres under 'Project Muslin' in various districts. A unique skill development centre under 'Project Sal and Sabai' was inaugurated as well.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the projects during a public distribution programme in Howrah. After coming to power, the Mamata Banerjee government has given a great impetus to the MSME sector, particularly to the development of muslin and cotton industries.

Bengal had been one of the largest producers of fine cotton and muslin clothes in the past. The present government, prodded by the Chief

Minister, has taken all possible steps to bring back the past glory of the industry. As many as nine production centres under 'Project Muslin' were inaugurated by Banerjee on Wednesday. They have come up in different places such as Kaliachak in Malda, Basoya in Birbhum, one each in Goja and Harishpur area of Udaynarayanpur in Howrah, one each at Domkal, Amuipara, Jiaganj and Salar areas in Murshidabad and at Gopiballavpur in Jhargram.

A regional centre for export of cotton clothes has also come up at Shantipur in Nadia. The district of Nadia is famous for various cotton clothes, an industry which was in shambles due to apathy of the erstwhile Left Front government.

The present government has given a new shape to the textile and cotton industries in the state, by installing confidence among the weavers through various social and economic schemes. One of the most significant steps by the state government was to set up platforms where the weavers can sell their products.

The Chief Minister has ensured that all the products made by weavers in the districts are made available in various state government owned outlets, including those under Biswa Bangla. To attract international buyers, Biswa Bangla centres have been installed at various strategic locations in the city, including one that is inside Kolkata Airport. These stalls exhibit various handicrafts and fine cotton clothes made by weavers from different districts.

Some other projects inaugurated by the Chief Minister include a production centre under 'Project Straw' at Sabang block under West Midnapore and another production centre under 'Project Vermicompost' at Moynaguri block in Jalpaiguri. A production centre of hand gloves has also been kick-started at the Bhuniakhali area of Moyna block in East Midnapore.

A production centre of handicrafts made of bamboo sticks has also been constructed at Sabang in West Midnapore. A new Karma Tirtha, which has come up at the Ramnagar area of East Midnapore, was also inaugurated. Setting up Karma Tirtha hubs was an initiative of the Chief Minister. The hubs serve as one-stop shops for entrepreneurs to market their products directly to the consumers in rural areas.
