Main accused in Amdanga incident arrested

Kolkata: Zakir Bulluk, the main accused in the Amdanga incident, has been arrested from Rajasthan on Saturday.

Around 17 days after the Amdanga incident had claimed the lives of three people; a team of North 24-Parganas police finally arrested the main accused from Ajmer. He will be brought to the state in transit remand within next two days.

According to the police, Bulluk was the mastermind behind the incident. Bulluk, a CPI(M) activist in the locality, is adept in tying bombs and had stored several of them in the village. It may be mentioned here that three persons were killed and at least 20 others injured in a clash that broke out between the supporters of the Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) last month.

Among the deceased, there were two Trinamool Congress activists. The district Trinamool Congress leaders had termed the incident a preplanned one and blamed the local CPI(M) men for triggering violence. Trinamool Congress leaders also alleged that CPI(M)-backed goons had hurled bombs on their party activists in a preplanned attack. The district police have already arrested 31 persons in this connection so far. The investigating officers came to know about Bulluk's presence in Rajasthan by tracking his mobile phone. According to sources in the district police, the accused might have visited some places in Maharashtra before taking shelter in Rajasthan. He had been frequently changing his location to evade an arrest.

Some locals added that Bulluk has been involved in various anti-social activities in the area. He had been at large since the incident took place. A senior district police officer refused to divulge the details of his arrest. It was learnt that he would be produced before a court in Rajasthan with an appeal for his transit remand.
