LPG explosion kills woman in Narendrapur

Kolkata: A woman was killed after a LPG cylinder exploded while cooking 'bhog' for a puja on Monday afternoon at Narendrapur in South 24-Parganas. The deceased was identified as Sumitra Mondal (45).

According to local residents, on Monday, Sumitra's neighbour Kabita Mondal had arranged for a puja of Loknath Baba on Monday. Since morning Sumitra was helping Kabita and her family to organise the puja. In the afternoon, Sumitra was asked to cook 'bhog' which is an offering to the God.

While cooking the food for the puja all of a sudden fire broke out inside the kitchen due to a leakage in the junction of the LPG cylinder and the pipeline. Other people who were cooking in the kitchen somehow managed to get to a safe place but Sumitra couldn't.

People, who had come to attend the puja, threw water into the kitchen and managed to douse the fire after a few minutes. Following that they went inside and found Sumitra lying on the floor with burn injuries. Her husband Akshay was also informed.

Narendrapur police station was informed about the incident. Cops rushed Sumitra to Subhasgram Hospital where the doctor declared her brought dead. Later, the police sent the body for autopsy examination. An unnatural death case has been lodged at the Narendrapur police station in this connection.

In a separate incident, a person was allegedly murdered by his wife and her lover at Bashirhat in North 24-Parganas on Sunday. The deceased identified as Ajay Mondal was a fish trader. On Sunday morning when he went out of his home, a few criminals attacked him with sharp weapons near his house. He was stabbed multiple times. Police said criminals fled from the spot.

First, it was claimed that Ajay was killed due to political reasons. But while probing the case, cops came to know that his wife Tumpa had an affair with a local youth identified as Mithun Mondal. On suspicion cops detained Mithun on Monday night. During questioning, he said Tumpa had planned to kill Ajay and he helped her to execute the plan by engaging contract killers. Mithun was immediately arrested. Based on his statement, police nabbed Tumpa on Tuesday morning. Police are interrogating the duo to trace the contract killers hired to kill Ajay.
