Locals block road after 14-yr-old girl dies in accident

Kolkata: Local residents put up road block disrupting the traffic movement at Kalitala More of Bhangar after a school student was killed in a road accident on Tuesday morning.
The victim, Sabrina Khatun (14), a Class IX student was trying cross a road when a loaded truck lost control and hit her. The truck driver fled the spot immediately along with the vehicle. The girl died on the spot. The local residents chased the errant vehicle but failed to catch it. After being informed the police reached the spot and sent the body for the post-mortem.
When a huge contingent of police rushed to the spot, the agitated people put up a demonstration in front of the police officers.
The local people said that Sabrina, a student of Bodra Girls' High School, was going to school on her own bicycle. When she was crossing a road, a speeding truck lost control and hit her from behind.
An angry mob put up block on Bhangar-Sonarpur road as a result of which the vehicles were stranded on the road.
The truck was carrying bricks to Sonarpur from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas.
When some political leaders from the district went to the spot to pacify the mob, they also were gheraoed by the mob who alleged that police had failed to take action against errant vehicles that often flout traffic norms. The locals also alleged that there is no proper surveillance in the area to check accidents.
The demonstration was lifted after the senior police officers in the district assured that they would take steps against the errant vehicles flouting traffic norms. Police are trying to identify the truck and also carrying out raids to nab the driver.
