Letters of Sister Nivedita to be released in two volumes

Kolkata: Swami Smaranandaji, president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission will release Letters of Sister Nivedita in two volumes at a programme at Belur Math on Friday.
The two-volume publication comprises nearly a thousand letters from Sister Nivedita (including some received by her). The monumental new edition will be published to commemorate her forthcoming sesquicentennial birth anniversary. The total number of pages in the two volumes is 1,338. This is a major publication of Advaita Ashrama, the publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math. It may be recalled that noted scholar Sankari Prasad Basu had published two volumes of Sister Nivedita's letters many years ago. The current volume published by Advaita Ashrama contains many letters which have remained unpublished so far.
Nivedita had superb command over language and she used to write letters. Her letters contained beautiful anecdotes and graphic description of places she had visited. Many of her letters were published in The Statesman. In some letters she used to describe herself as " an old lady", " a lady."
In connection with the 150th birth anniversary of Sister Nivedita there has been a great enthusiasm among people to read her works. She came in contact with a large number of national and international scholars and leaders like Rabindranath, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Dinesh Chandra Sen, William James, Patrick Geddes, Gopal Krishna Gokhale and so on. Swami Chetananandaji, a veteran monk of the Rakamrishna Orderhas recently presented a copy of the Complete Works of Sister Nivedita in the public library of Dungannon, her birthplace.
