Kolkatans observe 126th anniversary of Swamiji's Chicago speeches

Kolkata: The 126th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's addresses at the World Parliament of Religions, which was held at Chicago in September 1893, was observed in the city with great enthusiasm.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted on the occasion: "Today is the 126th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's epochal speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. His message of universal brotherhood is relevant even today. My respectful homage to the great saint."

The concluding programme of the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's Chicago addresses was held at Belur Math. Swami Smarananandaji, president, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, blessed the gathering.

Swami Suviranandaji, general secretary, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, spoke on the significance of Vivekananda's speech. Swami Shivamayanandaji, vice president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, Swami Balabhadranandaji, assistant general secretary Ramakrishna Math and Mission and Pinaki Chandra Ghosh, chairman, Lokpal, also spoke on the occasion.

The day was observed in Udbodhan, a centre of RKM. RKM will observe a devotee conference and youth conference on September 27 at Nazrul Mancha. The Vivekananda Institute of Environment and Management (VIEM) also organised a seminar to discuss the relevance of Swamiji's addresses.

Prof Pradip Kumar Ghosh, pro vice-chancellor, Jadavpur University, spoke on how Swamiji had talked about the Theory of Relativity and wrote a letter to Nikola Tesla on the matter. Prof Raja Banerjee of MAKAUT and Prof Bhaskar Gupta, ETCE, Jadavpur University, spoke on the occasion and explained the importance of Swamiji's views on education.

A rally was taken out in South Kolkata by Vivekananda Bhab Samanvya Kendra to commemorate the occasion. School and college students and people from all walks of life took part in the procession that started from Chetla and ended at Adyapith.
