Kolkata Police records statement of former ED official Manoj Kumar in extortion case

The Kolkata Police on Monday took statement of Manoj Kumar, former assistant director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), in connection with an extortion case lodged against him by a Chartered Accountant with Shakespeare Sarani police station.

He went to Shakespeare Sarani police station at around 2.30 pm and he was found leaving the premises at around 8.30 pm.

Sources said that they spoke to Kumar in connection with the allegations that were raised against him. A team comprising police officers from anti-bank fraud section of the city police's detective department was also present at the police station. It is learnt that they spoke to Kumar and wanted him to answer questions relevant to the case.

Kumar was summoned on March 24 to turn up at the police station for recording statement in this connection. It may be recalled that the complainant, Kamal Somani, had lodged the complaint alleging that a team led by Manoj had conducted a raid in his office on May 12, 2016. Subsequently, Pradip Hirawat started calling him for extortion money and took a particular sum by taking Manoj's name.

Pradip was arrested on March 1 in this connection and the police have recorded his statement.

Based on the complaint, a case was initiated under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and began to probe in to the role of Manoj in this connection.

It is learn that the police came to know in their preliminary investigation that Pradip, who used to run a travel agency, had bought air tickets and booked hotels for Manoj and Subhra when they went out.

Sources said that the cops put forward several questions on Monday before Manoj in this connection and asked him to reply to them. The police would verify his answers with their findings in the
same matter.
