Kolkata Police puts up makeshift pedestrian shelters in Park Street

Kolkata: Keeping up the spirit of the City of Joy, Kolkata Police has taken up a unique initiative to help pedestrians avoid standing under the direct heat of the sun, when waiting to cross roads.
City dwellers are seeing such shelters for the first time, which are helping them take cover from the sun's glare. Makeshift canopies have been set up at Park Street crossing and the move has been appreciated by people passing through the area.
According to an official, the canopies have been set up at Park Street initially. They will also be set up at many other places, if found useful and not causing any hindrance to pedestrians and movement of traffic.
The officer further added that so far, no such problem has come up after setting up the canopies at Park Street crossing, which have been there for the past four days.
It may be mentioned that temperature crosses 40 degree Celsius in the city in May and June. During this period, many pedestrians fall sick while walking under the direct heat of the sun and even leads to death due to sun stroke. So, the police have taken the initiative to set up the canopies.
