Kolkata Police keep tight vigil to ensure safe Christmas

Kolkata: Elaborate arrangement made by the Kolkata Police in Park Street and its adjoining areas ensured safety and security of the people who started visiting the place on the Christmas Eve from Monday afternoon. No vehicles were allowed to ply in Park Street on Monday evening as thousands of people thronged the area.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has inaugurated the Kolkata Christmas Festival at Allen Park on December 22 and it has now turned to a centre of attraction in Park Street where hundreds of people are visiting every day. Additional policemen were deployed in Park Street and its adjoining areas to avoid any untoward incident. Most importantly, the entire Park Street was divided into two flanks by placing security barricades at the middle of the road. People headed towards Mallick Bazar on one flank and the other flank was used for the people walking towards the opposite direction. As Park Street was kept closed for vehicles in the evening, all vehicles were diverted through alternate thoroughfares.

Police had kept a close vigil so that no untoward incident takes place when people visit the place. There were policemen in plain clothes who had taken action as soon as they found someone even attempted to create any trouble.

There were police assistance booths at different locations to help people by providing information. Watch towers were installed at different locations to keep a watch on the movement of people.

The officers posted on the watch towers contacted the concerned officers on duty in the particular area and asked to take necessary action when they found someone creating any sort of disturbances.

The Quick Response Team (QRT) of the Kolkata Police was also kept ready. Senior police officers of deputy commissioners of police rank were on duty in Park Street and they supervised the entire situation.

There was also heavy deployment of police at places including metro stations, malls and other places of interest.

There were pickets at different points that helped in checking reckless driving besides ensuring that no one manage to leave the city after committing a crime.
