Kolkata Gate to be thrown open before Poila Boisakh

Kolkata: Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) is going to open the Kolkata Gate at New Town before the Bengali New Year's Day in April.
The date of the inauguration of the gate, the only of its kind in eastern India, will be finalised shortly. Hectic work is on to give finishing touches to the huge construction. Special attention has been given to look after the safety and security of the people who will be climbing the viewers' gallery. Vector Designs, a Pune-based architect firm was engaged to make the design. The design was finalised by calling for submissions of designs through a public notice in the website as well as advertisements in newspapers. A committee headed by renowned architect Dulal Mukherjee was set up to finalise the designs from architects that were submitted from across the country. The construction for the structure began on March 6, 2017. The height of the Kolkata Gate is 55 m. Seventy tonnes of steel have been used. The visitors will be taken to the viewers' gallery by a lift. The viewers' gallery is around 25 meters above the ground level is covered by glass and there will be a restaurant where the visitors can get tea and coffee and light refreshments.
The tunnel will have photographs on Kolkata's heritage and culture. The outer part of the tunnel will be illuminated. There will be the logo of Biswa Bangla. The Gate has been constructed to greet those who come to the city from towards the airport. The construction cost of the Gate has been around Rs 25 crore.
The structure will add another feather to New Town. Since huge number of people will go to the viewers' gallery, a lot of emphasis has been given to ensure their safety and security. A splendid view awaits those who would visit the viewers' gallery, giving a clear view of New Town and its neighbourhood.
