Cops undertake yr-long programme to host blood donation camps

Following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instruction to overcome an acute shortage of blood in government-run hospitals and medical colleges, police personnel of the state have undertaken a year-long programme of organising blood donation and health camps at various police stations.

The state health department has already instructed all the senior health officials in the districts, hospital superintendents and the principals of various medical colleges to extend co-operation to the district police administration so that camps can be held smoothly.

Every year the hospitals and medical colleges suffer an acute shortage of blood as their blood banks run dry during the summer which has an adverse effect on the health services giving a hard time to the patients requiring urgent blood transfusion. Considering the gravity of the situation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the police and various clubs to host blood donation camps. Responding to her call, various clubs and police organised camps and managed to collect more than 60,000 bottles in the past few weeks. The state government had held a fortnight long blood donation initiative to the mark the sixth anniversary of the Mamata Banerjee-government. During that time around, 16,000 police personnel have donated blood over a period of one week which has immensely contributed to overcome the crisis in hospitals.
Under 'Utsarga' project initiated by Bengal police, every police station has been instructed to organise blood donation camps once a year. These camps will be held on every Saturday. Around 455 blood donation camps will be hosted across the state in the next one year starting from June this year till May next year.

The state health department has directed senior health officials in the district to keep close liaison with the local police authorities and extend all kinds of assistance needed by the Superintendent of Police, Police Commissioners or the Superintendents of Railway Police regarding organising such camps.

All the blood banks in the hospitals and medical colleges in the districts have also been asked to chalk out an annual blood donation plan. State government will also urge various municipalities and municipal corporations to provide air-conditioned ambulance services so that blood collected from the camps can be transported to the blood banks in a smoother manner.
