Bidhannagar cops start breath analysing to check malpractice

Bidhannagar Police have started checking the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of the drivers by using breath analysers at the important crossings of the city.

The step was taken recently after the city police came up with the idea to restrict the errant movement of the vehicular traffic by implementing strong rules. Police stations have been registering cases related to drinking and driving every day. Number of such cases is much higher during the weekends. "We normally register 7-8 cases of drunken driving in weekdays. But it goes up to 10-15 cases in weekends. Most of the drinking and driving cases are registered from Sector V, New Town, VIP Road and Teghoria and Baguiati," said a police officer.

The city police regularly check drivers with the breath analysers and such checks will be continued in the future too, a senior officer said. "We are spreading awareness against drunken driving in this area. We have seen that mostly motorbike riders were slapped with charges of drinking and driving cases in Salt Lake. Our motive is not to extract fines from people but to let them know that drinking and driving is not permissible here," the officer added. Comprehensive traffic plan would include surveillance cameras on the roads and installing radar speed guns to check speed of vehicles, proper lane driving, automatic traffic signals, SOS systems on traffic poles, special night patrolling vans for catching errant drivers and bikers and different speed limits for different vehicles.
