Fire at plastic godown in Burrabazar, probe ordered

A fire broke out at a godown of plastic goods housed in the ground floor of a three-storeyed building in the congested Burrabazar area on Tuesday night.

The state Fire minister and Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Sovan Chatterjee, visited the spot and ordered a probe into the incident.

Five fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames and the firefighters took some hours to extinguish the fire.

The fire spread fast as the godown was packed with plastic goods and other inflammable materials. The fire had threatened to spread to some adjacent shops and caused damage but was stopped.

According to an officer of the state Fire and Emergency Services department, an electric short circuit in the meter room led to the fire.

The firefighters had taken all necessary measures and doused the flames as early as possible.

However, some people were stuck in the building. The firefighters had successfully rescued them. The incident led to minor traffic congestion in the area.
