Constable killed after truck rams into jeep

A police constable from West Bengal police was killed in a road accident when the victim was returning from Belur in Howrah.

The victim Amarjit Singh, a police constable, was driving a police jeep when his vehicle was hit by a speeding truck at Foreshore Road in Howrah at around 2 am on Monday. Police have seized the truck but are yet to arrest the driver.

The victim along with some other policemen was going to Shibpur police line after duty near Belur Math on Sunday evening. According to the police, the truck was at a top speed; as a result of which, it lost control and collided head on with the police jeep.

Singh tried to move the vehicle towards left but he failed to avoid the accident as the truck rammed into the police jeep at a top speed. The frontal portion of the police vehicle was damaged badly due to the impact of the accident.

The incident led to traffic jam in the area. After being informed, senior police officers rushed to the spot. The damaged car was removed from the place later with the help of two cranes.

Police said that the driver of the truck could not control the vehicle as it was at a top speed. The local residents and police rescued the injured driver and rushed him to Howrah district hospital with serious injuries on his bodies. The doctors, however, pronounced him brought dead after being taken to the hospital.

The driver of the truck and the helper fled from the spot immediately after the accident leaving the vehicle at the place of the accident. Singh was currently posted at Shibpur police line under Howrah Police commissionarate. Police were investigating if the driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident. They are conducting raids at various places to nab the driver. A probe has been initiated.

In another accident, one 70-year-old Sheikh Rafi was killed when a bus mowed him down on NH 60 at Andal in West Burdwan district. A resident of Koirasol of Birbhum, Rafi was waiting for a bus to ride home but an Asansol-bound bus from Suri mowed him down to death on the spot.
