Fake doctor case: 4th arrest reported from Howrah

Howrah police on Sunday arrested another fake doctor who had been practicing in his chamber at Domjur without a valid registration. The accused has been remanded to five days' police custody after being produced before a court in Howrah.

The accused has been identified as Lakubuddin Mallick who used to run a chamber at Begori area of Domjur for a long time. Mallick, on Saturday night, removed his signboard which was hanging outside his chamber that aroused the suspicion of the local residents who reported the matter to Domjur police station.

They told the cops that the accused had been practicing at his chamber in Domjur for a very long time. The villagers also added that the accused had claimed himself to be an MBBS doctor and earned a name in the locality. After his arrest the accused confessed to the police during the interrogation.

Police said that following the arrest of many doctors from Howrah, the accused was scared and tried to remove the signboard during the night. The locals came to know of it on Sunday. When the police reached his chamber, they asked the accused to show the certificates which he failed to produce after which he was arrested.

The cops have started several cases against the accused including that of forging documents and cheating.

This is the fourth arrest made by the district police so far in this connection.

In the face of interrogation, the accused admitted that he never did any MBBS course. Police have started a detailed probe in this regard. It may be mentioned that another fake doctor was arrested from South 24 Parganas on Saturday for allegedly running a chamber without a valid registration.

It may be mentioned here that the Criminal Investigation Team (CID) which has been conducting a probe into the fake doctor incidents recently submitted a list of suspected fake doctors to the West Bengal Medical Council to verify if they had any registration.

The CID will soon arrest these doctors after getting confirmation from the state medical council.
