Health dept plans to install water ATMs in district-level hospitals

After the city's medical colleges, the state Health department is now planning to install water ATMs at the district-level hospitals.

The project will immensely benefit a large number of people who visit the Out Patient Department of various district hospitals in the state. During the summer, there is a crisis of water in almost all the hospitals in the districts, as a result of which patients visiting the hospitals do not get purified drinking water on a regular basis.

It was learnt that the project would be implemented in various phases. In the first phase the water ATMs would be installed in the Sadar hospitals in all the districts.

The project will be carried out by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. A special team will be set up with top health officials to supervise the new projects. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is also on the charge of the Health department had instructed the senior officials of the department to solve the drinking water crisis at various state-run hospitals in the state. Following the Chief Minister's instruction a survey was conducted by the Health department to identify the hospitals where there was no adequate drinking water available.

The Health department also sought a reports from the Chief Medical Officers of Health in the districts in this regard. After going through the details, the Health department will soon send a report to the Finance department and to the PHE department.

It was also learnt that while holding meetings with the senior officials in the districts, the Chief Minister came to know about the drinking water crisis at various state-run hospitals. The district officials were also asked to prepare list of the hospitals where the water ATMs would be installed in priority basis.

In the first phase, the water ATMs will be installed in various district hospitals where there is a crisis of purified drinking water. As per the plan, the sub-divisional hospitals and the block-level hospitals will also get these machines.
