Children march in Howrah against river pollution

In Howrah, over a hundred children marched on Wednesday with colourful festoons and placards to create awareness among people about the need to save the river Hooghly from pollution. The rally started from Gopal Chandra Mukherjee Road near Mallickfatak and ended at Telkal Ghat (ChintaMani Bathing Ghat), moving via GT Road, Forshore Road, Rameshwar Malia Lane, Rishi Bankim Road and its adjoining areas.

At Telkal Ghat, a meeting was held and a rally was led and organised by Howrah Jankalyan Manch. The speakers urged people to save the Ganga because the river gives not only water but "it is a part and parcel of Indian life, culture and civilisation". The awareness programme will be held in different areas in the future.

Union minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Uma Bharti in a recent meeting had assured the state government that they would receive all the cooperation needed in cleaning the Ganga.
