Man arrested from Howrah for involvement in kidney racket

A member of an inter-state kidney racket was arrested from Malipanchghara in Howrah for his involvement in a case in which some people were arrested from a hospital in Delhi.

The accused, one Arun Das, was arrested from his residence on Thursday night. A team comprising police officers from Delhi conducted the raid after receiving a tip-off and arrested the accused.

Arun was produced before the Howrah Court on Friday and he was remanded to transit remand. He will be taken to Delhi for further interrogation.

A few days ago, the kingpin of the racket, Jayant Sahoo was arrested in Delhi along with three other members of the racket – Anuj Patra, Birju Paswan and Sulekha Panda.

After interrogating all three of them, the investigating officers have come to know about Arun, whose main job was to refer patients to Jayant, saying that he will be getting a donor.

Arun had gotten involved in the racket after he was victimised by one such group and donated his kidney.

The police are yet to know the commission that he used to charge for referring patients to Jayant.

He had also worked to arrange donors from different states in the eastern region. Arun had recently sent a patient to Jayant in Delhi and police had come to know about it while interrogating Jayant.

Subsequently, steps were taken to arrest Arun.

Police suspect Arun of having connections with some people working as touts in some states in the South. Sources said that the accused was also involved in a kidney racket that was busted in Kolkata in June 2016.

Kolkata Police are also looking into the possibility of his involvement in any of the rackets in Kolkata or other parts of the state. If needed, police will take Arun in their custody for interrogation.
