MCI recommends debarring IQ City Medical College

After failing to fulfill the pre-requisite infrastructure, the Medical Council of India has recommended the Union Health Ministry to debar IQ City Medical College in Burdwan from admitting candidates in the MBBS course for the academic year 2017-18.

In a meeting held by the Executive Committee of the MCI in recent times, the regulating body found that the private medical college had failed to meet the infrastructural parameters set by the body. As a result, the executive committee recommended the Central government to take steps against IQ City Medical College in Burdwan.

The Centre may not allow this private medical college to admit candidates in its 150 permitted MBBS seats this year as they failed to fulfill necessary parameters. The medical colleges, both state-run and private ones across the country, need to take permissions from the MCI every year for admitting candidates. The 2017-18 batch will be the fifth batch of the IQ City Medical College since its inception.

The MCI pointed out that the deficiency of faculty is 15.90 percent and there is a shortage of resident doctors by 25.88 per cent. On the day of inspection by the MCI officials at this medical college, the numbers shown by the medical college were different from what was actually there in the medical college. Many patients were admitted with minor complaints like cough, cold, itching, and their case sheets were not even filled up. Even the bed occupancy did not match with the number that was submitted by the medical college. The MCI also found that the medical college also lacked Boys' hostel, visitors' room, AC studyrooms with computer and Internet, and recreation room.

In view of these infrastructural lapses, the Executive Committee recommend the Central government to not renew the permission for admission of the 5th batch of 150 MBBS students at IQ City Medical College in Burdwan for 2017-2018.

It may also be mentioned that ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences & Research may soon meet with a similar fate as one month time given to this private hospital by the MCI for fulfilling the minimum pre-requisite infrastructure is over. The MCI had earlier recommended the Centre that ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Haldia should be debarred from admitting candidates for MBBS course for the next two academic years. The private medical college which is run by an NGO associated with Laxman Seth, suspended CPI(M) MP, may fail to obtain a clearance by the Centre this time.

The Centre may scrap the admission of candidates to MBBS course for the next two years after the MCI pays a final visit to the college.

ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences & Research had repeatedly failed to meet the parameters set by the highest regulating body.
