Cops reconstruct Durgapur murder

Police reconstructed the sequence of events in Durgapur's Benachiti murder case in which the accused, Haidar Ali, had killed his wife and buried her in the lawn of the rented house where he lived.

Police took the accused, Haidar, to the spot and asked him to show them how he had committed the crime. The reconstruction of the events has been videotaped.
Sources said that police had recovered the iron rod and the sharp knife using which he had killed his wife Rina.

It was at around 1 am on Sunday when he was taken to the house of Tarun Roy, where he used to stay as a tenant in a plot on the ground floor. The reconstruction of the events was carried out late at night to avoid any law and order problems.

A police officer said that local people might attack Haidar if they found him near them.

"Thus, we took him to the spot at that time," he said.

Haidar showed the police how he had killed his wife. He explained that he first hit her on the head with a heavy iron rod and then cut her veins with a sharp knife to ensure her death.

It was a pre-planned murder and he had kept a spade ready, using which he dug a grave on the lawn of the house.

He buried her there and cemented the place to ensure that no one would suspect that he had buried a body in the lawn.

He had left the place within a few hours of burying his wife, locking their room from the outside.

Interestingly, he called the landlord the next day and informed him that he had killed and buried his wife in the lawn. The police were informed immediately and they dug up the body.
