Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill passed in Assembly

The Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill has been passed in the state Assembly on Monday.

Since the Calcutta hackney-Carriage Act of 1919 deals with stage-carriage in Kolkata, the Stage-carriages Act of 1861 is no more relevant in the present context in the state. Thus, it has been decided to repeal the State-Carriages Act of 1861.

Suvendu Adhikari, the state Transport minister, said: "In its 29th report the Law Commission of India has made an observation that there is a need to repeal the acts those are no more relevant. Thus, the Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill has been placed before the Assembly on Monday."

The minister has made it clear that operators of horse drawn carriages, in which people take a ride around Victoria Memorial Hall and engaged in different occasions, do not have to worry with the introduction of the Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill. The reason being introduction of the Bill will in no way affect their business.

In the late 19th century, horse drawn trams were introduced in the city. Though it had become a matter of the past long ago, the Bill in this regard was not repealed. Thus, the step has been taken to introduce the Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill.
