Online data over estimated crop production to help farmers avail right compensation

The unique mechanism developed by the Information Technology (IT) cell of the state Agriculture department in availing online data regarding estimated crop production at a particular latitude and longitude has come as a boon to farmers in getting the right amount of compensation against insurance policies for crops.

According to an official of the state Agriculture department, there are different types of insurance coverages for crops apart from those that farmers get for their damage due to natural calamity or any other untoward event. With the availability of an estimated crop yield of a particular latitude and longitude online with all the stake holders involved in giving compensation against insurance policies, farmers in the state will no more be deprived of their rights.

The process of calculating the estimated crop yield, which is done by a process called "crop cutting experiment" on particular mouzas, has remained almost the same. But the changes have come in maintaining real time record of the entire process of the crop cutting experiment to estimate the yield of a particular location. There are field workers who videograph when crop at a particular location is cut for the purpose of estimation and submits it to the concerned authority along with data containing the quantity that is being cut on a certain area of land for further detailed study and calculations.

After necessary calculations, the data is uploaded in Matir Katha website of the state government for the stakeholders involved in giving compensation against insurance policies and government officials.

With the introduction of the process of videography of crop cutting for the purpose, one cannot give a made-up figure without carrying out the crop cutting experiment in actuality. Moreover, the online availability of reports and other related data is helping in getting the absolutely correct figures of an agricultural plot on the basis of its latitude and longitude. Thus, there are no more questions of farmers not getting compensated properly in case they incur any sort of loss as per any of the insurance policies. Farmers had been facing the problem of not getting the right compensation due to improper calculations on estimated crop production for decades. But the erstwhile Left Front government hardly took any measure to give relief to farmers. Finally, the issue has been addressed only after the change of guard in the state and necessary steps were taken. As a result, the system using IT has been developed to assist farmers.
