CU workers' committee to meet over strengthening security in campuses

The workers' committee of University of Calcutta decided to strengthen the maintenance of the properties inside the campuses.

The age-old university has several campuses across the city – from North to South Kolkata and also in Salt Lake.

In view of proper maintenance of the properties, the committee members have discussed the issues and taken a resolution for quick action.

It may be mentioned that the authority of the university recently decided to install close circuit television (CCTV) in all the campuses and the common places of the hostels.

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta, Ashutosh Ghosh earlier had informed Millennium Post that the decision was taken to make security arrangements stronger inside the campuses. Ghosh specifically mentioned that in many cases, outsiders allegedly disturbed the academic atmosphere in the campuses. After the installation of surveillance cameras, the security personnel of the university would be able to keep a close eye on the entrance and exits of the visitors in the campuses.

"The police officers who often visit campuses to investigate student clashes related issues or theft cases, requested the university authority to install CCTVs. The UGC instructed the universities across the nation to install CCTVs in student-hostels to restrict ragging-incidents too. The installation of surveillance cameras is also a part of maintenance of properties," said a university source.

"The fund is an important issue for maintenance work. The syndicate of the university, which takes vital decisions, has recently approved the installation of surveillance cameras. The long-term maintenance works will cost a hefty amount of money. The committee has to work as per the budget," the source added.

Some of the campuses of the university are very old and it is indeed a hard task to properly maintain these historic buildings. "There are many historical evidences, documents and papers kept inside the buildings. Looking after them and important historical documents inside these buildings are really a challenge. In addition to these, the basic amenities of the students inside the campuses and hostels will also have to be restored," the source further said.

Recently, the workers' committee members saw some problems in the elevator at Rajabazar Science College Campus," said the source.

The authority received complaints from the women students of the university's Alipore campus that the sanitary napkin vending machine was out of order for several weeks. "All these problems will be discussed in workers' committee meeting," the source added.
