KMRCL prepares list of over 80 Bowbazar residents to hand over compensation cheques

Kolkata: A list of over 80 people has been prepared by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) for distribution of Rs five lakh compensation cheques. The cheques will be given out to the residents whose houses were damaged due to the construction work of East-West Metro.

According to sources, the KMRCL, along with the assistance of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Kolkata Police, is expected to distribute the cheques to the residents from the control room set up at Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration.

On Sunday, KMRCL, KMC and police had formed the control room to help the residents. For any type of assistance, the residents can directly go to the control room or call 9432610472.

On Monday, the residents were asked to register their names along with their premise numbers at the control room. Based on the details submitted by the residents, KMRCL prepared the list of over 80 people eligible to get the compensation. However, the number of people in the list will increase in the future.

"We have been called tomorrow at the control room. They (KMRCL) had earlier told us that cheques will be distributed from Monday (September 9, 2019)," said Asit Dey, a resident of 14/1D, Durga Pithuri Lane.

The disaster in Bowbazar doesn't seem to have come to an end as more houses have come under the threat of collapsing, apparently due to tunnelling work for the under-construction 16.6 km East-West Metro Railway project. The most affected areas are Durga Pithuri Lane, Shyakra Para Lane and Gour De Lane.

Residents of several more houses adjacent to Gour De Lane were also asked to vacate their premises. Between Sunday and Wednesday, 73 houses have been vacated. On Thursday, residents of 15 houses were asked to vacate. Only 11 houses have been vacated till Friday.

"We have not been informed by KMRCL about the distribution of cheques till now," said Bharat Soni of Shyakra Para Lane.
