Kolkata: In a bid to ensure that food stuff of inferior quality is not sold during Durga Puja, the health department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will embark upon a special drive from Wednesday which will continue till October 6.
The department has chalked out an elaborate plan for the food drive that would not only cover the so-called big restaurants but also food stalls particularly the temporary ones that will come up in and around the Puja pandals in the city. "We have already sent letters to the big Puja organisers in the city urging them to keep a vigil on the quality of food that will be served in the stalls that would come up in and around their puja pandals. We want to ensure that the pandal hoppers in the city do not consume inferior quality of food and suffer from stomach-related ailments," Member Mayor-in-Council (Health) Atin Ghosh said.
Food safety officers have formed four separate teams and will start their drive from Golpark area and will cover the area till Deshapriya Park. The second day drive on September 21 will cover Vivekananda Road area to Hatibagan. The food drive on September 22 will be conducted in and around Jadavpur including Prince Anwar Shah Road. The drive on September 25 will cover Maddox Square area and New Alipore while on September 26, the team will be at Bagbazar and Sovabazar area.
From September 28 to October 6, the food safety officers will visit the hotels and restaurants.
"The FSOs will submit their daily report along with inspection reports on schedule format and get it signed by the in-charge of the concerned hotel/restaurant to the MMiC," a senior official of the food safety wing of KMC said.
Apart from the restaurants, the team will conduct surprise visits at the food stalls around the pandals and will also destroy any stale food that they come across during the inspection. "The area for food drive on September 23 and 27 has not been finalised as yet," the officer added.
