KMC's environment improvement programme gets ADB award

Kolkata: Asian Development Bank (ADB) has praised the work of Kolkata Environment Improvement Programme (KEIP) of Kolkata Municipal Corporation ( KMC) at a function at Bengaluru on Thursday. The ADB officials handed over the certificate of appreciation to their counterparts in KEIP. ADB is currently assisting a $400 million project, the Kolkata Environmental Improvement Investment Program (KEIIP), in the city of Kolkata.

The Program is aimed to improve water supply, sewerage and drainage services and would install 170 km of sewerage network and 27,000 house connections, rehabilitate 700 km of inefficient water supply assets and provide 24 hours water supply in three pilot zones within KMC. The Program is being implemented by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) through a project management unit (PMU). Under the Program, ADB has approved two tranches totaling $300 million. The first tranche (Loan 3053-IND) approved in 2014, amounts to $100 million and the second tranche (Loan 3413-IND) approved in 2016, amounts to $200

million.
The PMU of KEIIP, achieved exemplary project implementation and project preparations in 2016, including activities and designs requiring preparations of two tranches of the program.
The PMU achieved the most impressive project preparations and readiness that led to tranche 2 (Loan 3413) achieving more than 70% contract award and more than 10% disbursement of tranche 2 within 7 months of loan effectiveness.
In 2017, the two projects are likely to achieve combined disbursements of $40 million. In parallel they have completed more than 50% of detailed design and bid document, for tranche 3 ($100 million), which is due for approval next year.
