KMC to write to ER over permanent fencing

Kolkata: Uncertainty looms large over the Durga Puja immersion in the city with the Eastern Railway putting up a permanent fencing on the passage leading to Baje Kadamtala Ghat near Eden Gardens. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is writing to the rail authorities urging them to remove the iron fencing pointing out that the fencing will jeopardise the immersion process. The ER had put up the fences in the wake of the death of three and injuries to seven people when idols of Lord Ganesha touched the overhead wire of Circular Railways during the immersion procession at Baje Kadamtala Ghat near Eden Gardens. "Muncipal Commissioner Khalil Ahmed is writing on behalf of the KMC to the Eastern Railway urging them to remove the fencing. Baje Kadamtala Ghat in Central Kolkata and Nimtala Ghat in the North accounts for the maximum number of immersions of the Durga Puja," Member Mayor-in-Council (Parks & Gardens) Debasish Kumar said.
A high-level meeting was with Kolkata Police and Kolkata Port Trust officials where this immersion aspect was discussed.
