KMC to soon provide civic amenities to under-developed pockets in city

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has identified some under developed areas in the city where civic amenities will be provided at the earliest.
The Bustee Development department of KMC is taking steps for developing as many as 8 areas in ward 58 under the civic body which lacks civic amenities.
"It is true that there are still some areas in the city which have facilities like the villages. In ward 50, there are areas like Khanaderia, Uchupota, Sahebabad, Anantabadal, Bahistala, Dakshin Bahistla, Durgapur and Arupita where there is lack of civic amenities. We have made plans to develop these areas and make all civic facilities available in these places," Member, Mayor in Council (Bustee Development & Environment) Swapan Samaddar said. It may be mentioned that potable drinking water has been reaching these areas but the residents have been complaining about poor road condition and improper lighting arrangements.
Samaddar said that apart from sprucing up roads and better lighting facilities, some toilets will also be constructed in these places.
KMC will also renovate a few ponds that have been choked due to apathy, neglect and misuse. The civic officials have also planned for making arrangements of a playground at a large abandoned tract of land in one of these places.
The Municipal Affairs department has allocated a sum of Rs 9.70 crore for development of these areas.
It may be mentioned that the civic body has already completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for setting up three night shelters at MG Road in College Street, at Canal South Road in ward 57 and at ward 138 in Garden Reach, to send to the state government for its approval.
The state has already given the nod for construction of such a shelter on MG Road and has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for it.
KMC has already selected 20 places in the city for constructing night shelters.
