KMC to construct medians on 10 important thoroughfares

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is constructing road medians, with shrubs on 10 important thoroughfares, as part of the drive to beautify the city. Road medians reduce accidents and increase the speed of vehicles.
A road median is coming up on Gariahat Road South, between Gol Park and Dhakuria. Another one is coming up on CIT Road between Lady Brabourne College and Moulali crossing.
A third road median is coming up on a stretch on APC Road, between Moulali and Nilratan Sarkar medical College and Hospital.
Similarly, another median is coming up on a stretch on AJC Bose Road, between Mullickbazar and Beckbagan. Two road medians will come up at HUDCO Crossing and on the stretch approaching Aurobindo Setu.
Earlier, KMC had constructed four road medians on Chittaranjan Avenue, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, Prince Anwar Shah Road and Sarat Bose Road.
Shrubs will be planted on the road medians. The civic authorities have purchased specially designed vehicles to water the plants.
It may be mentioned that many people had thought that the road medians will be converted into garbage vats, as people will destroy the plants. But over the year, it has been seen that the plants have not been destroyed and during monsoon, the road medians look very nice.
Senior civic officials said that the number of road accidents have dropped remarkably on stretches of roads, where the medians have been constructed.
Because of the medians, pedestrians can only cross the road at the intersections where traffic signals have been installed. Cars cannot overtake as well and this has helped to increase the speed of the vehicles. Thirdly, they also have an aesthetic value.
The road medians and the trees are regularly maintained and in future, more such medians will be constructed.
