KMC renames Mandeville Garden after Sunil Gangopadhyay

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has renamed Mandeville Garden as Kathasahityik Sunil Gangopadhyay Sarani.

Announcing the same, Ratan Dey, Member, Mayor-in-Council (Road) said KMC's road renaming committee has approved it and said: "The KMC is happy to rename the road after Sunil Gangopadhyay, one of the most powerful litterateurs of our time."

Gangopadhyay (1934-2012) used to stay in an

apartment in the area. He

got the Sahitya Akademi Puraskar in 1985 for his novel Sei Samay. He also got the Ananda Puraskar twice in 1972 and 1989.

Satyajit Ray had directed two films, namely Pratitdwandi and Aranyer Dinratri, based

on Gangopadhyay's novels. Tapan Sinha's famous film Sabuj Dwiper Raja was based on Gangopadhyay's story as well.

Modern day Tollywood director Srijit Mukherjee has also made two films, namely Mishawr Rahashya and Yeti Abhijan, based on his stories of the famous Kakababu series. Gangopadhyay used the pen names Nil Lohit and Sanatan Pathak.

Gangopadhyay was very popular as a poet as well and had attended literary conferences in Europe and USA several times.

Sunil's wife Swati Gangopadhyay welcomed the decision of the renaming on Wednesday.
