Kolkata: Tension ran high in Beliaghata on Thursday morning after local residents set a Kolkata Municipal Corporation crane on fire as it crushed a Class VI student to death.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 am on Thursday on CIT Road near the Beliaghata connector when a father and daughter duo, who were on a bicycle, suddenly came in front of the crane. The father was taking his daughter to school on his bicycle. The local residents alleged that the crane was running at a high speed at the time of the accident and the driver was in an inebriated stated. Police have arrested the accused.
The Police said that the girl, Tuli Das was going to school along with her father Rabindra Nath Das on a bicycle when they were hit by the speeding crane. The wheels of the crane crushed the girl while her father was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
An irate mob damaged the crane and then set it on fire. The local residents managed to catch the driver after the accident. After being informed, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The accused driver was handed over to the police. It was learnt that the crane was going to Ruby More from Ultadanga for Metro railway works.
After being hit, the father and daughter fell on the ground when the rear wheels of the vehicle went over the girls head. She was declared brought dead after being taken to a nearby private hospital. Her father is undergoing treatment at the hospital with serious injuries on his limbs. His health condition is also stated to be serious.
According to the police, the man was cycling on the wrong side of the road that led to the accident. The angry mob, however, set the crane on fire and staged demonstration in front of the police officers who reached the spot. The local residents demanded that the police must control the speed of the vehicles on the CIT road. A heated altercation broke out between the local residents and police. A huge contingent of police force reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The incident led to a huge traffic jam on the CIT road with the vehicles remained stranded for hours. Two fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flame. The fire tenders extinguished the flame after a couple of hours. The local residents alleged that vehicles often ply through the area flouting the traffic norms and this leads to road accidents. Police later cleared the road and the crane was removed from the place. Traffic movement was also resumed after remaining at a standstill for hours.
