KMC announces names of Puja committees selected for Swastha Bandhab Award

Kolkata: The Health department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Sunday announced the names of the Puja committees who will be bagging the Swastha Bandhab Sarad Samman Awards 2018, for undertaking awareness drives against vector-borne diseases in the most effective manner.

"We had received as many as 1,605 applications from the Puja committees. It was really encouraging and a clear indicator that they have taken our novel initiative very seriously. They have done door-to-door campaigning and held camps with flexes and banners for awareness drives on vector-borne diseases," said Member, Mayor-in-Council (Health) Atin Ghosh.

Ghosh said that 100 committees were selected for the final round, from which the KMC team has zeroed in on 50, with the help of a panel of judges that included eminent artistes and actors, vector control officials, borough executives, health officers and several others. 26 Puja committees, with three from every zone, will get the "Best Three" award and 24 will receive the Mayor's Choice Award.

The awards will be handed over to the Puja committees in November. "A memento will be displayed at every Puja pandal from Monday as an appreciation for their work and for the pandal-hoppers to see," Ghosh said.

The city was divided into eight zones, each comprising two boroughs. The Puja committees had to ensure that the pandal premises are clean, with no accumulation of water in and around it. Two extra Puja committees made it to the list of the Best Three because there was a tie in two boroughs.

The Pujas in the "Best Three" category will get Rs 30,000 each, while the committees getting the "Mayor's choice" award will get Rs 5,000 each.

The Puja committees that won the 'Best Three' award in their respective zones include Baghbazar Pally, Kashi Bose Lane, Nabin Pally, Sikdar Bagan, Bosepukur Sitala Mandir, Tridhara Sammilani, Samaj Sebi Sangha, Gariahat Hindusthan Club, Naktala Udayan Sangha, Santoshpur Trikon Park and Barisha Club to name a few.
