Kin brings charges of negligence after child dies

Kolkata: Family members of a two-month-old boy who died at Bongaon Sub Divisional Hospital on Tuesday brought charges of negligence against hospital authorities.

The incident triggered tension in the hospital when the family members staged protest within the hospital campus. It was learnt that the baby was admitted to the hospital with some ailments a few days ago.

Initially, the doctors said that the patient's health condition was improving. But on Monday evening, the doctors told the family members of the victim that the baby's condition was deteriorating fast. The hospital later asked the family members of the baby to shift the patient to another hospital. The patient died while being shifted to another hospital.

They also alleged that the hospital decided to transfer the patient late which had resulted in his death. The victims' family members lodged a complaint at the local

police station.

Following the incident the family members of the victim staged demonstration inside the hospital campus. When some of the staff members urged them to lift the demonstration a heated altercation broke out between the two groups. It soon turned into a scuffle involving both the groups.

The agitated family members then attacked some of the hospital staff. Doctors and nurses were heckled by the mob. The incident had triggered tension inside the hospital. After being informed by the hospital authorities, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police have started a probe in this regard. Hospital authorities, however, denied the charges of medical negligence. They have assured that they would look into the matter if there was any negligence on the part of the doctors or nurses.

It may be mentioned here that the doctors and nurses at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital were heckled by the family members of a newborn who died of alleged medical negligence of some doctors. The incident took place inside the hospital campus on Monday.

It was learnt that Payel Bibi, a resident of Ramnagar area of East Midnapore was admitted to the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital few days ago. She delivered a boy child on Saturday. The baby died on Sunday night.
