Khardah housewife succumbs after attack by husband

Kolkata: A 34-year-old housewife who was hit on her head with an iron rod by her husband on Thursday night, died in a hospital later.
The incident took place at the Kachaline area of Khardah in North 24-Parganas. The incident sent local residents into a tizzy, who have told the police that the couple squabbled often. The victim's husband has been absconding since the incident.
According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the accused had killed the woman on suspicion of an extra marital relationship.
The victim has been identified as Urmila Rajbhar. Police said that Urmila got married to Jitendra Rajbhar, a resident of Khardah around 15 years ago. They had three children.
Local people told the police that the accused used to have frequent quarrels with the woman and also beat her up quite often. The husband alleged that his wife had developed an extra marital relationship with a local youth.
According to the local people, a quarrel broke out between the couple on Thursday night. During a heated altercation the accused took an iron rod and hit her on the head. After hearing screams of the woman, local residents rushed to the spot and found that she was lying on the floor, bleeding profusely.
Her husband had fled from the spot immediately after the incident.
They rushed the victim to Balaram Seva Mandir State General Hospital in Khardah where she died later. Her body was sent for post-mortem later.
Police are conducting raids to nab the culprit who is still at large. They are also investigating the victims' family members and neighbours in this connection. A detailed probe has been initiated.
