Khadi Board joins hands with Spencer's to promote khadi & muslin garments ahead of Puja

Kolkata: In an effort to promote their latest designer and muslin products in a big way ahead of Durga Puja, the West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board (WBKVIB) has tied up with Spencer's and have come up with a khadi corner at three of the latter's stores.

"Durga Puja is the biggest shopping festival in the state and the WBKVIB is making big plans to capture a bigger share of the market. Our focus behind tying up with Spencer's is to attract the young generation towards designer khadi clothes. There is a belief among the common people that khadi clothes are for the elderly. We want to break this myth and ensure that the latest designer fabric of khadi and muslin is suited for generation Y," said Mrityunjay Bandyopadhyay, CEO of WBKVIB.

The board has come up with a khadi and muslin clothes corner at the Spencer's stores in South City Mall, Quest Mall and Madhyamgram. Gradually, more stores will follow.

The WBKVIB has come out with latest designs of fashionable dresses for both men and women made with cotton khadi, silk khadi and muslin. Sarees made of tassar, matka silk and fine-quality muslin are becoming popular among women of all ages.

The WBKVIB has as many as 12 outlets in the city, with the latest being the one at Park Street-Camac Street Crossing that was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Apart from designer clothes, the handicrafts made by the rural artisans like dokra items, wooden dolls, masks etc. are also available in the outlets.

According to sources in WBKVIB, the production target for this financial year is 5.3 million square metres of khadi cloth and the business target is Rs 95 crore.

There has been a 15 percent increase in total production target and a 25 percent increase in business in the 2017-18 fiscal, compared to 2016-17.
