Junior doctor heckled by cop after 'forced entry' into OPD

Kolkata: Some of the junior doctors at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday staged demonstration in front of the medical Superintendent's room after a junior doctor was allegedly heckled by a policeman. The incident also led to a partial disruption of health services at the Emergency ward.

The situation was, however, soon brought under control following the intervention of senior officials of the hospital and normal services were restored late in the evening.

The incident triggered a lot of panic among the patients and their family members.

Chaos broke out inside the CMCH campus after a junior doctor, identified as Bulbul Sheikh, was allegedly roughed up by a policeman outside the Out-Patient Department.

The junior doctor went to the OPD on Wednesday morning to visit a doctor. Some of the security personnel deployed outside the OPD alleged that Sheikh tried to forcibly enter the department despite a long queue outside.

Other patients standing at the queue raised protest as the junior doctor tried to enter into the department. It is important to note that the junior doctor was not wearing the hospital uniform and was mistakenly considered as one of the patients.

A policeman posted at the OPD reportedly told the junior doctor that he would not be allowed to enter, flouting the norms. This had led to a heated altercation between the junior doctor and the police personnel. The junior doctor alleged that he was badly beaten up by the cop. This triggered a stir as the other junior doctors joined the agitation. They staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the Superintendent's room in the afternoon.

The senior officials of the CMCH acted promptly and heard the grievances of the victim.

They assured that the matter would be looked into. Following the assurances from the officials, the junior doctors withdrew their agitation.
