JU student's death: Murder complaint against friends

Kolkata: The family members of the second year engineering student of Jadavpur University who died after drowning in a pond in Jadavpur's Ramgarh on Thursday lodged a murder compliant against the his five friends who accompanied him.
Souvik Chandra (20), a second year student of production engineering at Jadavpur University drowned in the Ramgarh Lake with his friends after participating in a football match on Wednesday morning. They had been living as a paying guest at Vikramgarh area.
After starting an investigation, police came to know that they used to go to play football in Pragati Sangha ground along with his roommates every day. Like other days, they played football on Wednesday morning and later went to take a bath in the pond when the accident occurred. The divers later recovered the body of the boy.
According to the investigation, police came to know that Souvik was trying to cross the pond along with his friends when the incident happened. Souvik was gasping for breath while crossing the pond. Police are investigating the involvement of the friends of the victim and started a case of unnatural death following the incident.
As per the preliminary investigation, police suspect that Souvik might have drowned after he suffered a heart attack. Police will come up with the final conclusion as the probe is still underway.
The family members of the victim have alleged that there may be some foul play behind the death of the victim. They urged the police to probe the role of his friends as to why they did not come to his rescue. The youth's friends who were accompanying the him on the day of incident claimed that they suddenly realised that Souvik was drowning. They rushed to his rescue but ultimately failed.
